Digital Awards

The first-ever North East Digital Awards will celebrate the achievement and highlight the talents of firms in the region using digital technology.

The Awards will recognise quality across all areas of e-business and provide free online promotion of businesses across the region, both for those which are creating and developing digital technology and those which are using it in the most creative and innovative ways.

Funded by regional development agency One NorthEast, and managed by e-business champion The North East Regional Portal, the Awards are open for entries until 28 March 2008.

Entries are submitted exclusively online at www.northeastdigitalawards.co.uk

Emmanuelle Martinot, e-business technical advisor for One NorthEast, said: “The North East of England is a hotbed for digital talent and these awards are an opportunity to highlight and celebrate those achievements. We’re really looking forward to seeing the nominations.”

The North East Regional Portal’s head of e-business Pascal Fintoni explained: “The rapid expansion and development of digital technologies in the North East of England is undeniable, and successful and innovative businesses deserve to be celebrated.

“These awards celebrate the achievements of businesses, companies and organisations that have recognised, developed and used digital techniques to generate and maintain effective online activities. This means that all Award nominees will be winners.”

The awards are divided into three Groups: Digital Users, Digital Suppliers and Digital Innovators and categories range from ‘Best E-commerce Website’ to ‘Best News and Entertainment Website’.

Taking a unique and imaginative step, the entire nomination and voting process will take place online – with every nomination featuring extensively on the North East Digital Awards website www.northeastdigitalawards.co.uk

The closing date for entry is 31 March 2008.

YouTrade

The One NorthEast e-business team and The North East Regional Portal are delivering a unique region-wide competition to encourage business start ups via eBay. The competition will be promoted through a series of events, marketing and publicity and was launched during Enterprise Week on the 18th November in Newcastle-u-Tyne (St. James's Park) at the 'Start your Business 06' event.

Entrants will be required to submit a business plan which will be judged by a panel of industry experts. 10 winners will be chosen and each will receive £2000 towards setting up and running their own 'e-bay' business.

The overall aim of the project is to assist new business start ups and promote the business benefits of e-Commerce and enterprise. This project will be run as a proof of concept pilot and will allow One NorthEast and the Regional Portal team to refine the proposition and develop a larger scale project for the financial year 2007-2008. The project will also assist a number of SMEs through provision of funding, to adopt ICT solutions which have been aligned to their business needs.

The project's core principle is 'business inclusion' and is open to all eligible individuals to apply. The target area covers the North East region which includes and is limited to Tees Valley, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear and County Durham.

eLeadership Council

The eLeadership Council seeks to increase both awareness and application of ICT across the North East economy.

In its position of oversight, The Council will be able to recommend joined-up and potentially, inter-agency solutions to this question with more effective delivery against economic development goals.

The council will take a lead role in the development and direct the implementation of a Regional Digital Strategy (RDS) which reflects National Strategies.

Catalyst

The scheme, managed by TNERP and supported by One NorthEast, offers a range of practical support packages and funding and is expected to run until the end of March 2008.

Catalyst will provide up to 50% funding to regional SMEs for a range of e-business ICT projects with particular focus on those SMEs who have not already engaged in the adoption of ICT solutions for their business. Selected SMEs will receive funding towards approved individual projects with agreed suppliers under a contract managed by TNERP. These projects might deliver for example, the design of a promotional web site strategically aimed at the business’ target audience, e-commerce facilities to develop on-line trade and content management systems with appropriate training.
